Accomplish Your New Year's Resolutions

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

We are rapidly becoming a society that cannot resolve to do anything. 92% will fail to accomplish their 2007 goals. As of Dec 2005 only 47% even set New Year goals, down from 88% in 2001. Yet people who set goals are 10 times more likely to achieve them. It seems that we have no resolve. Here is how to help overcome this problem.

Set goals:
Take a bit to think about what you need to improve on in your life. It can be physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally. Anything you can think of. List your goals in order of importance. Make them realistic. Be realistic with your targets, but don't make them too easy, either. Instead of having one massive target, consider having multiple smaller targets. But also think positive and NEVER negative about what you are doing. Choose to make changes at any time of the year. Don't put all the pressure on yourself to make changes at the arbitrary start date of January 1st. But it shouldn't be long after.

Develop a time-activated plan under each goal. For the top 3 goals you listed, make a detailed, achievable plan. For example, for losing weight, ask yourself how you will do that. Will you stop eating carbs? Cut calories? Go to the gym 3 times a week for 20 minutes at a time? Create accountability: Set up dates for evaluation with a mentor. This helps you stay focused and evaluates methods for improvement. It's even better if you find someone who has the same resolution.Remind yourself about it. For every day on your calender or schedule, write down what you will do for that day, what time you will do it, and don't forget to actually do it! No matter how busy you are. They're called challenging for a reason!

Focus on the process rather than the end goal. Take each step one at a time and be happy with your progress. The only way you'll get to where you want to go is to complete every small step along the way.Reward yourself for a job well done: determine ahead of time what rewards will be at small milestones of accomplishment. Have frequent small rewards and the "GRAND PRIZE" for completion. When the new year begins and you do or you don't have a resolution don't worry because you can make a resolution right away and make today the beginning of a new year for the rest of your life.
