Being alone even in your personal residence during the nighttime can be dull or frightening. However, adhering to the following steps may contribute to overcoming the anxiety that goes along with empty nesting.
Plan outings each week. Call up friends well in advance to schedule dinners, movies, poker nights, etc. Not only are they times enjoyable and a great opportunity to socialize with friends, but they also reduce the amount of time you have to spend alone.
Find a source of entertainment in the late evening / night. For some this may include watching a popular television show or film, reading a book or magazine, knitting, drawing, or a different hobby. If you truly enjoy your selected hobby, your time alone will be transformed from something to dread to something to look forward to.
Go to bed early. This will also minimize the amount of time you have to spend by yourself.
Lock all doors and windows before going to sleep. If you are afraid of doing this when it gets dark, lock up your house before dusk. Set your burglar alarm and make sure you are in close proximity to a working phone at all times.
* If you live on your own, try buying a pet. A pet can make an excellent friend.
* Keep quiet music on in the background if you're not actively listening to music or watching TV. This really helps a lot.
* Homely smells help too. Like maybe an apple-cinnamon scented candle.
* Learn to be your own best friend:
o Remind yourself of the good things that happened during the day
o Actively appreciate the good things in your life. (A good book to show you how this works is "The Power of Appreciation" by Noelle C. Nelson and Jeannine Lemare Calaba.
o If you have a spiritual way of living you can consciously merge with your cosmic friends or you can enjoy some OBE-Excursions. (Read "Astral Dynamics" by Robert Bruce)
* Don't get a pet if you smoke a lot.
* Also, pets get lonely too. Keep background music on for them if you're gone all day, and make sure they can see out of 2 different windows and have some sunshine.
