Stop Getting Distracted when Trying to Get Things Done

Friday, March 20, 2009

f you're always getting distracted when trying to get things done here are some tips for you.

Make it clear to yourself what you need to get done. It might be finishing your homework, doing your chores, studying, etc.If you get distracted finishing your homework, then make a game out of it, or give yourself a treat after completing it. If you get distracted doing your chores, and you have other siblings, make a game out of it by seeing who can do their chore the fastest. If you get distracted while studying, make it more fun by studying with other people, but make sure you still study. Figure out what is distracting you. Is it friends, TV, food? Get rid of the distractions! Tell whomever is distracting you politely that you need to get something done. If you are a muncher and food has your attention, chew some gum. That way, you are munching on something without having to continually eat. Catch yourself in the act of bad habits!

If you are addicted to television, dedicate yourself to one show only. That way, if it's the day before a test, you can still watch TV and study without feeling like there is something you NEED to watch. Designate a place, a room, somewhere free of clutter and a clean workspace. A good place would be your room and a desk. Every other day, rid your desk of clutter so you have a mess-free workplace. Keep your desk away from your window, and make sure you have a lot of light. Start meditation. Meditation helps in building the concentration and focus to the work we do like study, etc. Only meditate when you don't have anything really important you need to do. Avoid stress. Sometimes, stress causes a decline in concentration.

If a place is too loud, get some earplugs. REMEMBER: Ear plugs can be useful, but never have them in your ears if you are babysitting or in class. Kids need to be watched carefully and a teacher might try to get your attention. Try "bribing" yourself. Set something in front that is distracting you, and promise yourself you can have it when your work is done. (Ex. if you are being distracted by food, set some in front of you and tell yourself, I can eat it once I'm done with my work; or, if you are being distracted by music, set a CD or MP3 in front of you and tell yourself the same thing.) This will require some self-restraint, but it will work.

if you do this when somebody is home, there is more likely a chance that they will come up to your quiet place to ask you a question or just be making noise in general.
